4G arrives in Spain ultrafast and with better coverage within homes
The new connection, which will be implemented progressively throughout the territory until 2018, is faster than the ADSL
Telecommunications operators in the country began yesterday to activate their ultrafast mobile telephony networks of better quality . Although Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange offer fourth generation connections ( 4G internet ) since the summer of 2013, it is now when they can lend them over the 800 Mhz band , which until last March was used exclusively for nine channels of digital terrestrial television (TDT). This frequency offers better mobile coverage, especially in the interior of buildings, and a greater geographical reach.
The three large companies in the sector have started operations with the authorization of the Government to activate 25 stations or 4G access nodes each in this month . Vodafone concentrated the ignition in the city of Orense. "The lighting of nodes will take place progressively in the rest of Galicia and the national territory," advanced the branch of the British "teleco".
Telefónica has taken advantage of the usual reinforcement of its mobile network in the coastal tourist areas in the summer - given the influx of tourists and the scarcity of ADSL and fiber connections in the second homes - to start the service there. The locations chosen by the company chaired by César Alierta to launch its best 4G are points from Alicante, Castellón, Valencia, Gerona, Tarragona, Almería, Cádiz, Málaga, Huelva and Murcia. "The deployment will continue gradually over the next few months," says the company.
Orange , on the other hand, has started to give 4G with better coverage in some municipalities of Asturias, Barcelona, Burgos, Cantabria and La Coruña.
The three companies plan to complete the installation and cover the entire national geography with 4G through the 800 Mhz band in March 2018 . Next August they will be able to ignite other 60 stations with this technology each one, and in September 110 nodes more, so that the deployment will be done at the same rate.
Yoigo , despite having its own mobile network, was not awarded any license to operate in the frequency of 800 Mhz, and the rest of the telephone operators -Masmóvil, Pepephone, for example- offer their mobile connections by renting the networks of Movistar, Vodafone and Orange and depend on them.
Delay in ignition
Spain comes to this technology late compared to other countries because the Government was postponing the release of that radio spectrum occupied by nine television channels and its assignment to telephone operators, a process known as digital dividend.
For this, the Executive had to execute a judgment of the Supreme Court that annulled the awarding of that spectrum, during the Government of Rodríguez Zapatero, to the television networks that now occupy it, and for which the "telcos" had paid 1,200 million euros. euros in 2011 . Although the Ministry of Industry had promised to advance one year with respect to the initial plans, until January 2014, it was finally not completed until April 1 , partly also due to the difficulty of reviving all the homes on time.
That day, the DTT channels were relocated to other frequencies and the 800 Mhz band was assigned to the mobile telephony operators to provide their 4G services. Up to now they have done so through the frequencies of 1,800 Mhz and 2,6 Ghz, of lower quality, since, for example, they offer lower coverage inside buildings and in rural areas.
With the new spectrum these mobile connections will penetrate better the walls of the houses and the 4G will finally offer its real potential: average data download speeds between 30 and 60 "megabits" per second, and tips, when the network is not overloaded , 150 megabytes. That is, these networks are ten times faster than the current 3G .
